Visa and Qatar ID: the path to settling in Qatar
From your first landing to the resident card in your wallet, here is the administrative journey of a French speaker settling in Qatar, step by step, with the rules in force in 2026.
Visiting first: no visa needed for the French
Good news to start with: for stays of under 90 days, French nationals are exempt from a visa. Qatar grants this visa-free entry (free of charge, on arrival) to more than 100 nationalities, but beware: the length of stay depends on your passport, and not everyone gets the 90 days granted notably to Europeans.
Before boarding, make sure you have:
- a passport valid for at least 6 months;
- a return (or onward) ticket and proof of accommodation;
- for any stay of more than one month, mandatory health insurance, taken out online before departure with an insurer approved by Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health.
If your nationality is not exempt, tourist visas are issued through the Hayya platform (about QAR 100).
Working: the work visa and the sponsor
To work in Qatar you need a Qatari employer to sponsor you. The employer obtains your work visa and handles most of the paperwork. Worth knowing: recent reforms have loosened the system, exit permits were abolished in 2018 and the no-objection certificate (NOC) for changing jobs was scrapped in 2020.
The residence permit: your first steps on arrival
Once in the country, your entry visa is converted into a Residence Permit, usually within 2 to 4 weeks. Two mandatory steps:
- The medical exam: blood test and chest X-ray (screening for HIV, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis…).
- Biometrics: fingerprinting.
⚠️ Important: do not plan any trip abroad during the conversion, you cannot leave the country until the permit is issued.
The residence permit is then renewed by your employer (renewals run from 1 to 3 years, with a 20% discount for 3 years). Typical fees range from QAR 300 to 1,000 depending on the type of sponsorship.
The Qatar ID: your everyday key
Once the residence permit is granted, you receive your Qatar ID (QID), the card that is now the sole legal proof of residence. You will be asked for it everywhere: opening a bank account, signing a lease, connecting the electricity (Kahramaa), enrolling the children at school…
Issuing the card costs about QAR 100. And download Metrash2 right away, the Ministry of Interior’s official app: renewals, family visas, fines, national address… most procedures take a few minutes there.
Bringing your family over
To sponsor your spouse and children (family residence visa), the official conditions are:
- a salary of at least QAR 10,000 per month;
- 6 months of service with your employer;
- legalised documents: marriage certificate, birth certificates, plus a salary certificate and an NOC from your employer.
Each family member (even an infant) receives their own visa, valid for 1 to 5 years. Depending on the profession and whether housing is provided by the employer, a lower threshold (around QAR 6,000) may apply in the private sector: this varies case by case, check yours with the Ministry of Interior or through Metrash2.
The journey in a nutshell
- Arrive visa-free (or with a Hayya visa), with health insurance if staying over a month.
- Your employer converts your visa into a residence permit: medical exam plus fingerprints, 2 to 4 weeks, without leaving the country.
- Receive your QID: bank, lease, Kahramaa… everything becomes possible.
- Install Metrash2.
- After 6 months of service (and a QAR 10,000 salary): family reunification.
